Grade Point Average Explained

What is a Grade Point Average?

Grade Point Average (GPA) is an average of the grade point values that you have earned for the credit courses you have taken while a student at Emily Carr.

GPA Types

Semester Grade Point Average

This is the average of the grade point values that you have earned for all courses you have attempted in a semester.

Cumulative Grade Point Average

This is the average of the grade point values for all of the credit courses you have attempted while at Emily Carr, including repeated courses.

How do I calculate my Grade Point Average?

Grade point values range from 0.00 (F grade) to 4.33 (A+ grade). Each letter grade has a corresponding value. The chart below will give you those values.

Withdrawal

In order to calculate your GPA, you take the total amount of the grade point value you have been assigned for your grades and divide that by the number of credits. Examples follow:

Total 33.00

Take the Total Grade Point Value (33.00) and divide by the number of credits (12).

33.00 ÷ 12 = 2.75

In Example One, the student’s Grade Point Average is 2.75 which means this student has an overall average between a B and a B- grade (per the value table).

Total 33.00

Take the Total Grade Point Value (33.00) and divide by the number of credits (15).

33.00 ÷ 15 = 2.20.

In Example Two, the student’s Grade Point Average is 2.20 which means this student has an overall average between a C+ and a C grade (per the value table).

Transfer credit

When you transfer credit from another post-secondary institution into your degree at Emily Carr, the grades are not transferred with the credit. Any transfer credit you receive will be grade neutral, meaning that it will not impact your grade point average either positively or negatively. More information for transfer courses can be found here.

Repeating courses

When you repeat a course for which you received an F grade, the F from your first attempt at the course will stay on your transcript even if you re-take the course and receive a passing grade. Both the F and the new letter grade will be used in the calculation of your cumulative Grade Point Average.
